Starting October 25, Kiruna will have more SAS departures. When the airline’s winter schedule takes effect, Kiruna will gain an early morning departure to Stockholm and a late evening departure back \u2013 making day trips between the cities possible. At the same time, SAS is increasing the number of departures between Kiruna and Copenhagen during the winter season. Behind this announcement lies determined work from several stakeholders in both Kiruna and the county. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n

In 2025, a working group was formed with representatives from the Arctic Sweden Visitors Board, Kiruna Lappland Economic Association, Kiruna V\u00e4xer, LKAB, Viscaria, and Swedavia. The goal was clear: to bring back overnight stops at Kiruna Airport and strengthen accessibility to the region \u2013 for both visitors and the business community. <\/p>\n\n

\u201cAttracting new flight routes between our region and the rest of the world is a priority for us. That is why we work in dedicated aviation councils together with airports in Norrbotten,\u201d says Johanna \u00d6gren, Marketing Manager at the Arctic Sweden Visitors Board. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

Air traffic in Kiruna has faced accessibility challenges since the pandemic. For international guests, it has often been difficult to travel all the way to Kiruna in a single day, while the possibility of day trips to and from Stockholm has been limited for both businesses and residents in the region. <\/p>\n\n

New hires at the airport crucial <\/h2>\n\n

A key part of the effort has involved skills supply at the airport. Like many other businesses in Kiruna, the airport has faced challenges in recruiting the right expertise. <\/p>\n\n

Through determined recruitment efforts at Swedavia and a close dialogue between the working group and the airlines serving Kiruna Airport, conditions have gradually improved. This, in turn, has been a decisive factor in allowing overnight stops to be reintroduced. An overnight stop means that the flight arriving in Kiruna from Stockholm in the evening stays overnight to fly back to the capital early the next morning. <\/p>\n\n

\u201cDuring the year, we have worked intensively on skills supply to strengthen our operations. This allows us to now meet the growing demand and further develop the airport, both in terms of operations and increased traffic. We are very pleased that SAS is investing in Norrbotten,\u201d says Ulf Nygren, Airport Manager at Kiruna Airport. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

Growing international interest <\/h2>\n\n

The investment from SAS is also part of the airline’s broader strategy to strengthen accessibility within Sweden and between Scandinavia and the rest of the world. <\/p>\n\n

\u201cThe overnight stop makes it possible for Kiruna residents to take day trips to Stockholm, which strengthens accessibility in the region. At the same time, we see a growing international interest in Swedish Lapland, and with more departures from Copenhagen, we are making it easier for travelers from all over the world to reach Kiruna,\u201d says Henrik Winell, Vice President Network at SAS, in a press release. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

During the peak season, between December 17 and March 7, SAS is also increasing the number of departures between Copenhagen and Kiruna from two to three per week. Copenhagen serves as Scandinavia’s global hub with direct connections to destinations in Europe, North America, and Asia, providing international travelers with seamless connections to northern Sweden. <\/p>\n\n

Record winter for Kiruna Airport <\/h2>\n\n

The positive development is already visible in the statistics. During the past winter, Kiruna Airport had its highest passenger numbers ever for December and January. <\/p>\n\n

\u201cThis winter season, the airport in Kiruna has had its highest passenger numbers ever for the months of December and January. The cold winter has simply been ‘hot’ among visitors,\u201d says Johanna \u00d6gren. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

The reintroduced traffic is therefore seen as an important step in further strengthening accessibility to Kiruna \u2013 for visitors, businesses, and residents throughout the region. <\/p>\n\n
